Oh, holy Wenceslaus!<\/p>\n
Svatov\u00e1clavsk\u00fd Speci\u00e1l<\/strong> is a Czech lager brewed with whole leaf Saaz hops, which we hauled ourselves straight from the fields of Czech “hop mekka” \u2013 \u017datec. Along with Saaz, we also used Sl\u00e1dek hop pellets from the same region. These two hop varieties lend the beer subtle spicy, woody, and herbal notes. On the Plato gravity scale, used not only to measure the sugar content of the wort but also to label and classify beers in Czechia, Svatov\u00e1clavsk\u00fd Speci\u00e1l<\/strong> comes in at 13 degrees. In Czech brewing terms, the magical threshold of 13\u00b0 transforms a standard lager (le\u017e\u00e1k) into what\u2019s officially known as a pivn\u00ed speci\u00e1l<\/em>, or \u201cspecial beer.\u201d That means that this pivn\u00ed speci\u00e1l<\/em> is just a little bit stronger, darker, and more bitter than an ordinary lager. But make no mistake, it\u2019s still very much a pilsner!<\/p>\n Traditionally brewed in autumn, Svatov\u00e1clavsk\u00fd Speci\u00e1l<\/strong> is named in honor of Saint Wenceslas \u2014 Svat\u00fd V\u00e1clav <\/em>to the Czechs \u2014 the patron saint of beer, brewers, and, funnily enough, the Czech nation itself. There\u2019s no precise definition of what Svatov\u00e1clavsk\u00fd Speci\u00e1l<\/strong> must be. The only expectation is that it should be something a little out of the ordinary.
